How Kata is Being Used to Deploy TWI at Baptist Memorial Healthcare

Facilitated by Brandon Brown

How do you get the daunting task of educating, training, teaching, and applying the practice of Training Within Industry within a 15,000-employee healthcare organization like Baptist Memorial Health Care? Traditional timetables and driving the training and application to the hospital floor level seemed overwhelming in the beginning. Do we use a strategic level A3 approach? Should we look to find a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) or a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), or maybe find an Agile Project Manager to assist us? These are successful in their own unique way. However, Baptist Memorial Health Care asked a different question: Why not build upon internal innovation where we are already seeing success – Toyota Kata? Let’s define our Challenge, analyze where we are in our Current Condition, decide where we want to be in the short-term Target Condition, and PDCA our way through the unknown obstacles. Let’s deploy TWI-JI using Kata thinking.
